Tabaristan Architectural Symbolism A Unique Characteristic Roof

The roofs of buildings in Tabaristan, due to the continuous and long rainfall, have a different appearance, which is a simple adaptation of the region’s climate and meets the basic need to protect the building from this rainfall, and its appearance is different from the roofs of buildings in other parts of Iran. The present article is about the sloping roofs of residential buildings as one of the architectural characteristics of Tabaristan. In this regard, first, the various factors affecting the formation of the roof of the building, its historical course, nature, advantages and disadvantages of its covering are examined, and then the position of the structure as a common element of sloping roofs, as well as the similarities and differences between the roofs of buildings in Tabaristan and the roofs of buildings in other similar climates in the world, are studied. Next, the advantages and disadvantages of living under the eaves and the scope and scope of application of sloping roofs are examined. Finally, with the help of the positive points of sloping roofs, some suggestions are presented for the architecture of modern buildings in the region.
This research has analyzed and supplemented the obtained data and presented a final conclusion using theoretical studies, review and analysis of previous research in this field, field studies and analysis of the results obtained, and statements by local knowledgeable people.
